Sounds fun, right? Sorry, but I don’t mean chicken nuggets and mac and cheese. I mean your mindset. Remember when you were a kid and food was the last thing on your mind. I watch my niece try to get her 5-year-old daughter to eat and it’s such a struggle because she has so many other, more fun things to do. Toys and playdates trump eating almost every single time. Until she is actually hungry and needs more energy to plan again, of course.
What if we were more like that? What if we only ate when we actually got hungry, and the rest of our life was more fun than food. And food was fuel again?
My clients get mad at me sometimes, when I tell them that their food should not be their entertainment. They are so sure that food brings them joy – and lots of other things – that eating does not actually provide. Are you mad at me now too? It’s okay, I can take the heat. But take a minute and consider that food may have too much importance in your life. Perhaps it’s playing a role that can be better filled with your version of toys and playdates.
