I didn’t think that I was an emotional eater for many years, but it turns out I was! I thought, “My life is great! Why would I be emotionally eating?” But then I really started paying attention to subtle feelings I was having like slight boredom, uneasiness, restlessness and mild annoyance.  These “non-threatening” feelings were actually driving me to the pantry often.

Eating to avoid emotions shows up in obvious ways sometimes, particularly when we are feeling very sad or hurt. In these instances, we can easily identify our emotional eating.

But more often than not, there’s a softer, nagging of emotion that we can grab a drink or cookie to get rid of, without even realizing it.

When we learn to recognize these emotions and how to deal with them, we eliminate the need to snack them away.
