“Confusion is always a lie”. This statement, from my mentor, hit me hard a while back. It took me some time, but I have realized that often when I think I am confused, I am really just avoiding doing something that I don’t want to do.
I sometimes hear my clients say, “I’m so confused, I don’t know what to eat”. I will agree that there is plenty of contradicting information out there concerning health and weight loss. But we sometimes use confusion as an excuse to do nothing. When we just throw our hands in the air and give up because of “confusion”, it may be that we know exactly what to do – we just don’t want to do it.
Eliminate “I don’t know” and “I’m confused” from your mind around your weight loss decisions. Those thoughts are not serving you and you shut yourself down when you think them. Our brains are wired to try to keep us safe, to keep us from stepping into uncertainty, to avoid the unknown. But the unknown is always where your progress is. ”I don’t know” blocks that progress.
Start watching yourself when you are confused. Is it really that you don’t know what to do, or is it that you don’t feel like doing it? Or maybe it’s really fear? If we decide to be confused instead of taking action, we don’t have to worry about failing.
I still notice myself indulging in unnecessary confusion. I don’t always jump up and do the thing I am avoiding, but I now try to label it fear, or laziness or lack of confidence, NOT confusion.
Using “I don’t know” is often just a habit. What if you always had to answer yourself when you were entertaining “I don’t know what to do”. Don’t be afraid to know. Access your wisdom that you may be blocking. Take the best next, small step that you think will work. Don’t wait for the perfect answer, just take action.
Don’t let confusion stop you.
